A women’s rights organisation, MIFUMI, has called for reforms on bride price, saying the traditional practice has been abused and is fuelling strife in homes.
It wants the practice renamed bridal gifts, as it was before.

The chilling story of Nathan Awoloi, a hunter from Palisa district in eastern Uganda who allegedly forced his wife, Jennifer Alupot, to breastfeed puppies, has triggered Ugandan women activists into calling for outlawing the long held tradition of bride-price.

The payment of bride price is today a one-man affair.
The “wealth” has become 'price' and so the women are bound to suffer quietly.

Injustice does not know a person’s gender, creed or race. That is why there was an outcry from society about the ‘breastfeeding puppies’ story.

On the surface it would seem that Mr Nathan Awoloi of Okurutok village in Pallisa showed clear signs of Puppy Love when he forced Jennifer Alupot, his loving wife, to breastfeed his five puppies.

Bride price is a practice which, if respected, should not be a source of demeaning forms of violence in marriages.

What would citizen Awoloi have subjected his wife to if he had paid forty or fifty head of cattle for his bride?

Mr Ochorin went to court to have his bride price refunded. He won the case.

The story of  a man who forced his wife to breastfeed puppies is one that cries out loud against the inhuman, degrading, violent and abusive treatment of women in this country, all because of bride price.
