Budaka, Eastern Uganda – In a heart-wrenching case that has shaken the community of Namengo village in Budaka Town Council, a 14-year-old girl is battling for a dignified life after being brutally assaulted by her paternal uncle using an iron rod, leaving her permanently paralyzed from the waist down.
The incident, which occurred on December 8, 2024, sparked outrage among residents and human rights defenders. The case was reported to Mifumi who swiftly took it up with the police, and with the support of the community, the culprit was prosecuted and sentenced to five years in prison by the magistrate sitting in Budaka.
The survivor’s journey since then has been marked by resilience and community support. She was first admitted at Budaka Health Centre IV, and later referred to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with spinal injury and recommended intensive physiotherapy. Given the unsafe and unsuitable home environment, Mifumi then relocated her to their shelter in Tororo for protection, counselling and special medical attention.
Medical specialists from St. Anthony’s Hospital recommended her admission for treatment of bedsores and urinary tract infection, alongside physiotherapy. After weeks of care, she was referred to kampala where doctors confirmed her paralysis as irreversible.
She was then admitted to katalemwa chesire home for the disabled where she received occupational therapy and rehabilitation to help her regain mobility and independence. She has now been resettled with her grandmother in Namengo, where she continues to recover under close supervision. Social workers and legal officers from Mifumi continue to monitor her health.
Today, the community and other stakeholders, are calling for action to modify her grandmother’s house to accommodate her condition. Mifumi is currently making modifications which will include adjusting the bathroom, toilet facilities, windows, doors, and general access to make the home disability-friendly.
“There is a great need to reintegrate her back into her family with dignity,” said one of the social workers following the case. “We are appealing to well-wishers, local leaders, and organisations to support this cause and give this brave girl a chance to live in a space that meets her needs.”
This tragic case serves as a powerful reminder of the far-reaching impact of violence against women and children and the urgent need for continued community action, not just for justice, but for healing and inclusion.
